Joseph Barrell
Joseph Barrell was a wealthy Bostonian merchant of a respected family. Though primarily a business man, he also dabbled in the arts and may have designed the medallion commemorating Lady Washington.
He owned a great deal of property, including an extensive house in Boston and over eighteen acres in Charleston, Mass. His mansion was designed by Charles Bulfinch, one of the expedition sponsers, in 1792. Ironically it later became one of the first insane asylums in the newly created United States.
He had earlier attempted to form a Northwest coast expedition which never got off the ground (Scofield 37). It was Charles Bulfinch who encouraged him to try again (Scofield 39). Together they formed an exclusively Boston owned group to finance the expedition (Scofield 40).
