Revolution

After serving as a merchant vessel for several years, the Washington was refitted as a privateer in 1776. Many merchants went into that business, for as the war went on, trade goods such as sugar and coffee became scarce. There was a lot of money to be had in privateering, as well as the patriotic pride of helping the Colonial cause.

The Washington is rumoured to have overcome four British vessels at one time, and captured the Weathrill who had on board a precious cargo of sugar. The Washington was described as a "veteran" (Scofield 43) later on and performed an important part in the American Revolution.

In order to avoid further confusion she was renamed Lady Washington from her original name of "Washington" (Gough 170) which had suddenly become rather popular.
