Return to China
Despite the loss of her charismatic captain, the ship's clerk, John Howel, took command and set off for
China.
Once in Canton, Howel seemed to lose interest in remaining captain.
He sold the furs Kendrick had accumulated in an effort to cover the debts. He also sold the brig
itself to himself and found a likely captain to take her back to the Northwest coast. Howel stayed in Canton, and did fairly well for himself. Lady Washington returned to Nootka Sound under the command of an unknown new captain.
